Successful career planning involves the development of an awareness of individual skills and abilities, occupations and education/training pathways.

St Joseph’s College is committed to assisting all students develop and manage an individual pathways plan.

The College has a Pathways team, which is lead by a Pathways Coordinator, and a well resourced Pathways office, which is open to all students from Years 7 to 12.

Students are involved in structured activities from Years 7 to 12 mainly through the curriculum Key Learning Areas, some of which are:

  • Knowledge of the College’s resour ces and key personnel
  • Identifying strengths and talents
  • Exploring pathways to jobs
  • Careers and Vocations at Year 9, which include resume development, writing applications and interviewing techniques.
  • Work Experience at Year 10 level – a compulsory two week placement in the workforce
  • Occupational Health & Training – compulsory for all students involved in Work Experience
  • Subject selection assistance, especially in the latter years
  • Involvement in community based programs
  • Student and Parent Information Sessions
  • Supporting student involvement in alternative programs, eg VET (Vocational Education & Training), VCAL (Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning) and School Based New Apprenticeships.
  • Information sessions from representatives of organizations suc h as tertiary colleges, the Defence Force etc.
  • Information sessions to assist in applying for pathways beyond Year 12.

The diversity of outcomes of St Joseph’s College students is challenging and demands constant investigation of career pathways, the development of networks and the provision of suitable current resources. The Careers Room is constantly evolving to meet the changing needs of students and to keep abreast of information.

The Careers Room endeavours to provide an open relaxed environment, conducive to discussion, communication and genuine commitment to maximising the potential and outcomes of students who are navigating their learning pathways at St Joseph’s College.
